Day 27 : LancasterSubmitted by simon on Tue, 29/11/2005 - 00:08.
Americans are experts at dining out, it's something that they do far more than Brits and the American speciality has to be breakfast. I started the day having breakfast with Sarah, her mum and Sonny at a small family owned breakfast restaurant called the Pantry Deli - or the Shanty - where the food (sweet, savory and every combination thereof) was excellent. I love American breakfast. With Sarah and Sonny off to another performance I headed to downtown Lancaster with Sarah's mum, to see the sights. I imagine it's a fairly sleepy little city at the best of times - so on a late November Sunday afternoon there really wasn't much going on. That said, there are a great number of original brick buildings - unusual fo the US. Thank heavens that North Berwick High School has the foresight to include compulsory viewing of the 1985 "classic" film Witness in my religious education, for Lancaster is Pennsylvania's Dutch County - home of the Amish people! And, in an offensively insensitive way we set off down the country roads to track down and photograph these black clad, plain living people on horse and buggy. We also came across an old "One Room Schoolhouse" - now a museum. When the tour guide announced that the exhibit, made in the 50s, comprised 30 wax model children who talked and moved, I knew that I had to see it! And, I have never seen such a bad yet thoroughly entertaining exhibition before. It was surreal and quite freaky. The tour guide offered us song sheets so that we could sing along with the children but what transpired was that he really wanted to sing along. Finally, by virtue of the hilariously named towns in Lancaster County, I'm also pleased to report that I spent some time with Sarah's mum in Intercourse before finally reaching Paradise. simon's blog | login to post comments
